Canadian artist John Fraser (aka “GundersonMunderson“) created a video that gives the 2011 film Drive a retro Sega Genesis style title screen. John’s chiptune version of “A Real Hero” by College and Electric Youth is available to download online from SoundCloud.

9-bit color, divvied up into 4 palettes of 15+alpha colours each, just like momma used to make. The song was made with an emulator for the Yamaha YM2612, the chip used to create the sound in the Sega Genesis.

Olly Moss has been one of my favorite designers for some time now.  Please, go to his website and buy his prints.  Let’s make sure that he is able to nothing other than make art.

Tony Baxter

You probably don’t know his name or recognize his face, but this man more than likely created a part of your childhood (one of the good ones…).  Tony Baxter—who’ll stay on in a part-time capacity—stepped down from his full-time position as Senior Vice President, Creative Development at Walt Disney Imagineering today.  He started working at Disneyland at age seventeen.  I’ll never forgive myself for the time I had an opportunity to meet him, and didn’t.  Mr. Baxter, thank you.  This one’s for you …

Django Unchained … The Best Way

image

I don’t know what the worst way to see Django Unchained is, but I’d bet a fist full of bloody dollars the best way is at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles.  The theater—which is owned by Quentin Tarantino—is showing a cartoon and hand-selected previews by the acclaimed director before each screening of DU that can’t be seen anywhere else.  If you don’t have the balmy luxury of living in the greater LA area, I’m going to give you the closest thing to a Viewmaster experience of this screening as you can get.

The lights dim.  In order of appearance …

The first goody is Merry Melodies cartoon, Dog Gone South.  Thematically, this is a perfect funhouse mirror reflection of the film.  http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/82940403/

Next, The Arena.  The preview seen at the screening identifies the film as Gladiator Women.  The reason for the discrepancy, I don’t know.  “The arena was an orgy factory.”  I don’t know what that’s all about … but put me down for two.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huC_frc8zPs

Mandingo.  Maybe never in all of moviedom has one trailer been so quotable.  “You thinkin’ I don’t know a virgin when I sleeps with one n’ pleasures?” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1priqpSfjvY

Boot Hill. “Death comes in two colors.”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-S-OB5DDSc

Tick…Tick…Tick. “This is what happens in a southern town when law and order is in the hands of a black man.”

Take A Hard Ride. If you ever have to take $86,000 across nine hundred miles of danger, see below.
